もし行為の本質的種のうちのひとつにおいて、行為者が自分が何をしているのか知っており、かつそれが行為であり、単なる出来事ではないと知っているのであれば、約束の場合のように、〈行為者は自分がその行為を遂行する者だと知っている〉ということが、行為それ自体の本質に属する——ゆえに、行為にも、ヒュームの循環が成立する。

以前から予告されており、個人的に待望していた The Cambridge History of Philosophy, 1945–2015 がいつのまにか出ていたので紹介。と言ってもまだ読んでいないどころか買ってもいない(今月はもう本を買わないことにしているので12月になるまで買うのも我慢している)。目次と周辺情報だけの紹介だ。
パート1は分析哲学、パート2は大陸哲学、パート3は両者の比較や接点を扱うという構成になっている。パート1は主に分析哲学の歴史だが、この中では「行為の哲学」「心の哲学」「ゲティア以後の認識論」「分析美学と芸術哲学」など、戦後の分析哲学のさまざまな分野を扱った論文が一通りそろっている。私の知っている項目で言えば「行為の哲学」の項はMaria Alvarez, John Hyman、「分析美学と芸術哲学」はStephen Daviesが書いており、執筆陣もなかなか豪華だ。近現代を扱うだけあって、哲学史研究者ではなく第一線の哲学の研究者が歴史を書くという形になっているのが独特かもしれない(The Oxford Handbook of The History of Analytic Philosophy もその辺は似ているが)。
前シリーズにあたる The Cambridge History of Philosophy, 1870-1945 もある程度読んだが、20世紀哲学史は、明らかに重要であるにもかかわらずまだ全然研究されていない謎の領域もたくさんあって楽しい分野だ。近い時代であればあるほど、「教科書的な歴史」を真に受けてしまいがちだが、「教科書的な歴史」はちょっと調べると簡単に崩壊するので、簡単に知的衝撃を味わうことができる。
ついでに紹介しておくと、The Cambridge History of Philosophy, 1945–2015 と扱う時代が近いのは2013年に出版された The Oxford Handbook of The History of Analytic Philosophy だ。こちらは本書と違って分析哲学史限定だが、分析哲学史に関しては扱っている分野はかなり重なっている。例えば、分析美学の項目は、The Cambridge History of Philosophy はStephen Daviesが書いているが、The Oxford Handbook の方では Peter Lamarqueが書いている。両者を読み比べてみるのも楽しそうだ。
